TWENTY-FOUR

RYLAN FLYNN

“Wait a minute,” Tyler says, holding a hand up. “Rylan, you know I support what you do, but this is currently a crime scene. We can’t just start looking for ghosts in the middle of it.”

“But – ”

“He’s right,” Ford says with obvious disappointment. “This isn’t like the other times when the scene was closed.”

“But if we wait, who knows what might happen.” My voice cracks.

“It’s pushing it to even let you this far,” Ford says. “I can only do so much.”

“What is my sister trying to convince you of now?” Keaton joins us on the porch dressed in a suit.

“Keaton, glad you made it,” Ford says, shaking his hand.

Keaton takes his hand, but his eyes are on me. “Why are you here?” he asks, not unkindly.

“It’s Mickey. Of course I’m here.”

“I mean on this side of the tape. You could compromise the scene. We don’t want to give any reason to a defense attorney to discredit what we find here.”

I hate that he’s talking like a lawyer. Hate even more that he’s right.

I stand, feeling horrible but unable to leave. “We were just discussing the little boy ghost that haunts this house. Maybe I can talk to him and get some idea of what happened.”

Keaton almost laughs out loud. “Now that would definitely be fodder for a defense attorney. A séance at the scene. You know you can’t do that.”

“It’s not a séance and it might help.”

“It might be the thing that gets the kidnapper off.”

“But we have to catch him first.” I step closer to my brother, my blood singing in my veins in anger.

“We will catch him. Our way. You can’t help in this.” He doesn’t back down, uses all of the five inches of height he has on me to be imposing. It’s a trick he’s used since we were kids. He’s never put a hand on me, not even in our worst fights back in the day. He only had to stand tall and I would back down.

I resist the urge to raise on my tiptoes to look him directly in the eye.

Ford intervenes as he always did. He puts a hand between us. “Okay, okay. We all want the same thing here.”

“Look, Rylan. I’m really sorry that Mickey is missing. You know I love her too. But we have to do this by the book and be careful that we get this guy.”

“Do I have a say?” Marco, who had been quietly watching, chimes in.

“Not really,” Keaton says. “This is a law matter now.”

“But if Rylan has a way to help find Mickey, I want to use it,” Marco says.

I’m relieved Marco still believes in me, but Keaton blows air in exasperation. He looks to Tyler for help. Tyler only shrugs, staying out of it.

“You know I can’t let you in the house,” Ford says to me. “What if she does it in the side yard?” he asks Keaton.

He rolls his eyes. “You guys just won’t let this go. What if she doesn’t even make contact with this spirit and the word gets out you tried this? It would be a disaster.
