Chapter 14

Dora helped Penny get ready for bed. Penny knew by the pinched expression on her sister’s face that Dora was still angry with her. Dora didn’t understand the sense of satisfaction Penny got from taking care of the old carousel. Penny wasn’t sure she understood it herself. Was it simply the historical value? Penny had an affinity for old things like the house they rented and the house where they had lived with their grandmother. One reason she’d applied at the Carriage House Cafe was because the architecture charmed her and she had been intrigued by how Gage had turned an old stable building into a trendy restaurant.

But if she was to be honest, she knew it was more than the historical significance of the ride. Without the golden horse, the carousel would be only an interesting novelty. Getting the splinter connected her to the brilliantly carved horse. It was still a block of wood. Yet it was more, just like the dolls Juniper had told them about. Unlike the dolls, however, Penny didn’t think the spirit or entity haunting it was evil.

“I won’t be able to hear you if you call out once I remove my hearing aid for bed,” Dora said. “I wish Ben would have stayed.”

“I’ll be fine. With his broken wrist, he wouldn’t be comfortable on the couch.”

“I can’t believe you’re okay with this. Usually Ben drags you into his investigations. This time you’re jumping in with both feet, quitting your job, and putting yourself and the rest of us in danger.”

Ah. Dora was not just worried about her sister, but about herself as well. “I’m sorry about the car crash. It must have been very traumatic for you. I didn’t know at the time that Archie was anything more than a nuisance. I told the police I suspect he was the shooter. They’re going to investigate him and hopefully put him behind bars.”

“And if they don’t find any evidence against him?”

“I’ll be on my guard now that I know what he’s capable of. And the police will watch him even if they can’t arrest him.” She didn’t mention they were also going to look into Ron. No point in giving Dora something else to worry about. Besides, she was sure Archie was behind her car troubles and the shooting.

Even with the painkillers the doctors had given her, her arm burned like fire. She stayed strong for her sister, but once Dora left her alone, she sank down on her pillows, clutching her arm with a whimper. It was almost impossible to find a comfortable position to sleep in.

Finally, however, her exhaustion and the drugs in her system overcame the discomfort, and she slipped into a troubled slumber. Dreams skittered through her mind. Dreams of being chased, hunted, shot at. This time, when the bullet hit her, she fell off a cliff rather than down a hill. She tumbled for what seemed like forever, the ground rushing up to meet her. She awoke with a start before she hit, her heart pounding.
