Birdee is taller than me. But only by two lines marked on the wall. We are looking at the unimaginable. Mum is nearly naked, lying on her back. Legs in the tidal creek bobbing up and down. The water, nudging, is trying to stir her up. But she won’t be moved by the muddy brown wet, no matter how much it taunts her. Her face is frozen. Hair a tangled bundle of wet straw. It’s hard to tell where she ends and the bleached reeds begin. She’s watching the sky, a miserable stain of blue. Gaze rigid. But who knows what she’s seeing?

I have pissed my shorts. Warm water pooling in my left trainer. Birdee has her palms over her ears. That’s how I know I’m screaming. Like I’m on fire. One continuous roar—
