Cole glanced across the table at Patrina. She hadn’t said much since they had begun eating. He figured what he’d told her moments ago in the living room had given her something to think about.

She was stubborn, filled with more spirit and fire than any woman he’d ever met. Considering those things, she probably would still not admit to wanting him, and definitely would not act on it, although they had kissed about four times now. And they hadn’t been chaste kisses, either, but the kind that set your body on fire. Hell, his body was still burning and he was hard as a rock.

At least if nothing else he was proving to her that she was indeed a sensual woman, something else she still probably wanted to deny. All and all, he felt that when it came to Patrina Foreman, he still had one hell of a challenge on his hands. The good doctor just refused to acknowledge what was so blatantly obvious. She needed a good roll in the hay just as much as he did. He refused to let up trying to convince her that indulging in a couple of sexual encounters with him was just what she needed.

Deciding the silence between them had lasted long enough, he figured it was time to get her talking. She was very dedicated to her job, so he decided to begin there. He leaned back in his chair, took a sip of his wine and asked, “What exactly do you do at that clinic, Patrina?”

It took her a while but she finally lifted her head and looked at him. And then she was frowning. “Why do you want to know?”

He shrugged. “Because I’m interested.”

She gave a doubtful snort, which meant she didn’t believe him. He understood what she was doing. For a little while she had let her guard down with him and now she was trying to recover ground and put it back up. “And why would you be interested?”

He had an answer for her. “Because I’m interested in anything that involves you,” he said, completely honest and totally unfazed by the cold look she was giving him.

It was hard to believe that less than an hour ago she had been warm and willing in his arms. She’d kissed him with as much passion as he’d been kissing her. The memory of their tumble onto the couch and the way their lips had locked still had heat thrumming through him. He was in worse shape now than before mainly because he had gotten a good taste of that bottled-up passion and was determined to get her off that damn shelf now more than ever.

“So tell me,” he said when she refused to start talking. “I’m really interested in what you do at that clinic, so tell me.”

“What if I don’t want to?” she asked through tight lips.

He smiled. “Um, I can think of several ways to make you talk.”

Evidently the ones he’d been thinking of crossed her mind, too, and she quickly dropped her gaze and began studying her glass of wine.
