Remember that proper standing requires an efficient pedal stroke. Adding body weight to the action creates the need for a bigger “platform” to push against in order to maintain smooth, rhythmic riding (unless the grade of the hill shifts up dramatically). This means a heavier gear will be required, or you will be prone to sinking or blowing through the pedal stroke. By this, I mean that you are forced to overspin, or fail to have enough load, or tension on the chain, to allow proper mechanics to remain. Note that 80 percent of the momentum gained is in the first two pedal strokes. Once standing, 6 to 10 pedal strokes are typically all that is needed to maintain, gain, or create momentum. From there you must be careful to select the appropriate gear so that you can return to a seated position and regular pedaling without loss of momentum.

•There is no sudden load on the quads when you rise up.

•The contact patch of the tire, head, shoulders, and hips remains aligned at the center.

•The hands feel light.

•The tip of the saddle occasionally brushes the hamstring halfway between knee and buttock (as a result of leaning the bike).

•Heart rate does not climb much more than the few extra beats required to support your body weight.
