CHAPTER 15

Iwas pleasantly surprised when Kai and I made it back to our satellite offices to see that Fiona had indeed decided not to be late meeting us. One of the interns already had her sitting in an interrogation room, and Kai and I were standing on the other side of the one-way glass, checking out her body language and demeanor.

She was rather slim, in her mid-thirties with severe short black hair. Her skin was abnormally white as though she bathed in sunscreen, and she had an athletic build. She was a very nervous-looking creature with an air of constant impatience, as was clear by her chocolate brown eyes continually darting around the room.

"How do you want to handle her?" I asked Kai.

He crossed his arms and narrowed his gaze through the window at her. "I'm thinking quick and direct. And don't be surprised if she gets irritated real fast," he replied.

I rolled my eyes. "Definitely won't be after our conversation on the phone," I told him.

"That much fun?" He smirked.

"That much fun," I confirmed. "Are we both going in?"

"Let me get a run at her first," Kai told me. "She already doesn't like you from the sounds of your phone conversation."

"Ha ha," I replied as he twisted the doorknob and pulled the door to the interrogation room open.

I watched from the observation area as he walked in and sat down across the metal table from Fiona. She watched him intently, her brow furrowing more with each passing second. Kai took his time sitting down and scooting his chair closer to the table. Then he slowly folded his hands and placed them in his lap and looked up at Fiona.

"Fiona Kanik?" he asked, louder than I would have expected. So loud, in fact, that Fiona flinched a little, and her eyebrows creased even more.

"Yes, I'm Fiona Kanik," she snapped. "Who are you?"

"My name is Special Agent Cameron with the FBI. I will make this as quick as possible as long as you make your answers as clear as possible," he told her, staring into her nervous little eyes.

"Fine," she sighed, clearly irritated.

Kai cleared his throat and continued. "Are you aware that two of the properties you manage have now had structural failure that has resulted in multiple people being injured? Some of those injuries being severe and life-threatening?"

Fiona started rubbing her hands together and shaking her head. "I don't know how they happened," she answered.

"That wasn't the question," Kai snapped, surprising even me. "Are you aware that two of your properties have now had structural failures that resulted in severe injuries?"

Fiona, obviously affected by Kai's relentlessness, seemed to retreat slightly. "Yes, the townhouse and the fitness center," she answered under her breath.

"What kind of maintenance standards would you say you have for the properties that you manage, Ms. Kanik?" Kai shot out.

Fiona straightened up, taking on an immediate defensive posture. "My safety standards for maintenance are the highest in Florida," she said, her voice climbing in volume. "My company doesn't make any money if nobody rents our properties.
