‘Morning,’ Jenni calls out to Pam as she places her handbag under her desk.

‘Good morning.’ Pam glances at the time displayed on her computer. ‘You’re a little later than normal.’

‘Oh, I just grabbed a cuppa with Norelle before coming up. Thus, I’m cutting it fine.’ She bites her lip as she checks if Priya is anywhere around.

‘Coast is clear. Priya’s got a regional manager’s meeting today,’ Pam assures her.

‘Phew! How are you?’

‘Alright. I’m going to have to eat good today. Brian made enough creamy gnocchi to feed an army last night.’

Jenni nearly tells her she doesn’t have to eat it all, but realises it might sound judgey. It’s harder than you think to talk people out of their self-deprecating thoughts, she thinks. ‘It’s tricky. Most of us have grown up with the message that we have to eat everything on our plate,’ Jenni says.

‘And you should see Brian’s serves—it’s a mound,’ Pam declares.

Jenni decides to share, ‘I’ve been learning from Norelle to enjoy each mouthful and eat how much I need to satisfy my hunger and feels good in my body. I’d often eat until I was overly stuffed just so I could feel… I don’t know… complete.’ Jenni shrugs.

‘Well, it would be a challenge with Brian, let me tell you,’ Pam matter-of-factly states as she turns back to her computer.

Jenni wonders if that is actually true or if it is a story that Pam has made up. How often do we do this? Jenni thinks. How often do we believe the stories we tell ourselves when they may not be true?
