Here is the first basic rule: go and consult more experienced people who have achieved the objective you have set yourself. Quickly explain your situation and ask: ‘What would you do in my place? Try something else or persist in my present course?’

Even experts can’t predict with 100 percent certainty whether a person will succeed using such and such a method (otherwise, publishing houses and literary agents would all be mega-rich), but consulting several may remove some of the unknowns and steer you in the right direction.
