Jennifer looked at the clock. Five minutes had passed since the last time she looked. Seven p.m. At six-thirty she had turned off the heat under the spaghetti sauce. Her jaw was clenched. Well, this was a first, she thought: she stood me up. She bit on her thumbnail, her irritation growing with each bite. The telephone interrupted her gnawing. She was uncertain how she would handle Kristan’s unexcused lateness.

“Yes?”

“Jennifer? Francis.” She heard the hesitancy, the unexpected slowness of speech.

“Is something wrong?”

“Jennifer, there’s been a bad accident. We have a lot of people dead. You need to go over and look at the scene, get a feel for it. You’re going to handle this one.”

“Where?”

“On Route One, going toward Fordland.”

“Francis, are you all right?”

“No—yes.”

“You know them?” The question need not have been asked.

Jennifer barely heard the quiet yes before the line went dead.
