The place Gunnar brings us to after another hour of walking is a lodging like the one we left, but one that is clearly meant for merchants, not raiders. The warm, high-ceilinged entryway is spotless, a pretty votr fountain bubbling in its center beneath a crystal chandelier.

The white-robed light elves clustered around the room fall silent when we enter. A light elf comes around from behind a large, marble desk. “She will not be pleased to see you,” he says sourly to Gunnar. It seems we need no introduction. “Wait here.” He barely twitches his eyebrow toward the door, but a moment later, several guards latch the large door behind us and stand in front of it, stone-faced.

Gunnar seems unfazed by the unfriendly welcome, his earlier worry now apparently set aside and replaced with swashbuckling confidence. “Lovely room,” he says, tucking his hands in his pockets.

Several awkward minutes later, a tall lady with straight, indigo hair and gleaming, bronze skin enters the room. “I never thought you’d show your face here again,” she says coolly. “Not after what you did last time.”

“I know, I know.” Gunnar holds up his hands. “It was horrible of me. If it helps, I regretted it immediately.”

“It does not,” she hisses.

“I’ll make it up to you this time. We have a—”

“Lock them up.”

At her command, the guards leave the doors and approach us. The warband edges closer together, and I wonder why the berserkers are not yet … going berserk. Perhaps they are less than willing to fight for Gunnar’s past misdeeds.

“Hold on! Just wait a minute, here. You haven’t heard what I—”

“Meaningless words!” She scowls. “I do not care what you promise. Your word means nothing to me now.”

“I said I would pay this time. We’ll pay. I swear it. Wait until you hear what Ketil and the others have planned.”

“I see.” The light elf crosses her arms. “You will pay me this time, but you still owe me from last time. What then? You’ll pay for both at once, with this little raid you have planned?” She laughs in Gunnar’s hesitant-looking face. “Into the basement with you, wretched warband. Down the stairs you go. You’ll come out when I say you can.”

A guard opens a door at the side of the room, revealing a darkened stairwell. The other guards crowd us toward the doorway, and finally, Gunnar leads us to it, no longer arguing.

“You will pay. Just like you said. And you’ll pay for the last time, and any other offense still to come. One way or another—with your treasure or your lives. I do not much care which.”

The basement is dark, lit only by a few tiny windows near the low ceiling. A steady dripping in the far corner torments my ears with its uneven rhythm, and I try my very hardest to ignore the rustling noise, which can only be from rats. I have a feeling there will be no offer of stinging lavender here. Too bad I left that precious bucket of clippings at the other lodging.
