Chapter Nine Challenges
j m re y ou a bl e to take care of yourself in a real fight?" asked Hong ff^M Kong-based British journalist Ted Thomas. The man to whom Wf ^f the question was directed was Bruce Lee, the premiere martial
artist of the twentieth century. Lee smirked slightly, put his left index finger up to his lip in thought, and then answered: "I will answer first of all with a joke, if you don't mind. All the time, people come up and say, 'Bruce, are you really that good?' I say, 'Well, if I tell you I'm good, probably you will say that I'm boasting. But if I tell you I'm no good, you'll know I'm lying' '
After chuckling with Thomas over his joke, Lee then changed his jovial tone: "Okay, going back to being truthful with you, let's put it this way: I have no fear of an opponent in front of me. I am very self-sufficient, and they do not bother me. And should I fight, should I do anything, I have made up my mind that, baby, you had better kill me before I get you."
The point being that, as capable as Bruce Lee was of settling a confrontation with his fists or feet, his confidence in his ability to take care of himself—against anybody in the world—meant that he never felt the need to have to prove himself to anyone other than himself.
I recall an anecdote relayed to me by Lee's attorney, Adrian Marshall. The two of them had gone out for lunch with film producer Raymond Chow at an upscale Westwood restaurant. "During the course of the lunch, we were served by a jerk of a waiter who went out of his way to be rude to Bruce," recalled Marshall. "He spoke in a condescending manner to Bruce, who, to my surprise, just smiled at the man and totally ignored his rudeness. I finally asked Bruce why he put up with this jerk. Bruce replied: 'I came in here in a great mood, so why would I choose to allow someone to ruin it?'
