On August 30, 1282, Peter landed with his troops at Trapani, a city on the western corner of Sicily about 250 miles from Messina, where Charles was commanding the siege. The latter did not break off to engage Peter, for he would have been trapped by the Aragonese and the rebel forces. Peter therefore captured Palermo and marched toward Messina unmolested. Charles realized he would have to fight Peter with no prospect of retreat – he was between the Straits of Messina and the city –so he crossed over to the mainland. Peter pursued him, taking most of the towns and villages of Calabria by February the following year. All the while, Admiral Roger of Lauria harried Charles’s coastal defences.
