IT WAS ONE OF THE ODD MISCHANCES THAT must befall forces operating at vast distances from each other that, just as Colonel Mayer gave up his hope, the French columns in the east were making headway once more. Colonel Morrison got his column under way again in May, and after an unsuccessful attack at the beginning of the month, Moopa was captured, after bombardment by a 80mm gun on June 23rd. A month later Bertua was re-taken, and on July 25th Dume was entered. In late June Lome had been captured by Colonel Hutin; the French force was thus established in a threatening position with regard to Yaunde, when it was no longer of immediate value.
