âTwo days march,â Kalsh replied. âHe will have started to make preparations as soon as he realized his assassin didnât make it back. He wonât give up so easily. After decades of peace, the land is on the brink of a war.â He sighed.
They rode in silence for a bit until another question popped into Goodwinâs mind.
âWhy would they want to kill Lord Reghan?â
âThere could be any number of reasons why,â Kalsh explained. âCould be political ambition, greed, jealousy, anger, bitterness, or simply boredom. One never knows with these things and we may never find out if we kill him. Dead men have a nasty habit of not talking, and if he puts up a fight, he may very well need to be killed. We want to avoid that at all costs since Lord Reghan wants to speak with Garod personally.â
They rode for hours until General Kalsh finally called for a stop. The line of soldiers broke off into smaller groups and sat in the grass to let their horses graze and to stretch and rest their own bodies.
A flock of vultures flew overhead, giving Goodwin a chill down his spine. It was as if they were anticipating death to come and were eagerly awaiting fresh meat.
âThatâs a bad sign, you know,â one of the knights said to Goodwin. He looked at the man who was sitting on a log by the side of the road; chewing on a loaf of bread.
âIâve heard that,â Goodwin said. âWe have the numbers though if it comes to a real war.â
âAye, that we do,â the knight agreed.
âThen a few vultures wonât change the war,â Goodwin said.
The man shrugged and went back to eating.
Goodwin took the opportunity to rest his legs and back. He wasnât used to riding all day. He was thankful that Kalsh hadnât required them to wear full armor.
âThis will all be over soon enough,â Goodwin said to the man.
The knight nodded in agreement.
