Chapter 21

“It could simply be a dick thing,” said Max, holding up a battered shrimp.

“A dick thing?” Strands of wiry noodles dangled from Savannah’s chop-sticks. “What do you mean, a dick thing?” She glanced at Briony for enlightenment.

“This need that you say Tobias has to control everything around him,” replied Max. “If he wants sex, he’s willing to pay for it—because he can, and why shouldn’t he? It could simply be because he’s insanely wealthy, and self-made, or because he’s a man, and that’s just the way they like to roll sometimes. But it was damn shortsighted of him not to put a legal agreement in place.”

“That surprised me,” said Briony. “He’s usually careful about protecting himself.”

“I’m sure the papers paid her well.”

“Why is it always the men who are the billionaires?” asked Savannah, sick of discussing Naomi-gate.

“Because women aren’t that ruthless or willing to claw their way over one another’s back to get to the top?” suggested Briony.

“That’s not true at all,” said Savannah, speaking from experience. “Women can be more vicious.”

Max picked up another shrimp. “I agree. Women can be just as ruthless as men.”

“Look at Piranha Queen.” Savannah reminded them.

“Let’s not talk about Candace tonight,” said Briony.

“I’d like to know how many of those billionaires had to take care of children, and the laundry when they were first starting out and building their businesses.” Savannah added her two cents.

“Don’t forget,” said Max, pointing her chopsticks at them, “a billionaire woman’s most likely going to have to pay for sex because no man is going to have the balls to want to be with her. Most men can’t handle a woman earning more.”

“I don’t know if that’s entirely true,” said Savannah, thoughtfully. Colt had been content for her to be the breadwinner for a while.

They had successfully managed to get through two bottles of wine and were still ploughing their way through cartons of Chinese takeout. The topic still revolved around Tobias and the ‘relationship problem’—something that Briony had brought up early on. But now that the wine was flowing, Savannah no longer seemed to mind that they were dissecting her relationship.

While she didn’t want to hog the conversation and have it be centered around her and Tobias all the time, it did her good to discuss these things with her friends. It was something she couldn’t bring up with Lenny’s mom, because Julia seemed to be infatuated with Tobias. Savannah didn’t have this same problem with Briony and Max.

“Why is it that in this day and age we still have those stereotypes? Tarzan and Jane don’t only exist in the jungle. Why is it that Tobias is the king and you two,” Max pointed her chopsticks at them again, “are running around after him like minions?”

“I don’t run around after him,” Briony protested.

“Neither do I.”

“You’re a special case,” Max told her, finishing off her wine. “You’re in an elevated position because you’re sleeping with him—or at least we hope you will be soon once we figure out what the problem is.
