Chapter 11

Alonzo knocked and opened the door to Lavaughn’s apartment at the same time. He locked the door and continued through the room to the couch. Colin was stretched out, propped on pillows and covered by a blanket. He was so still, it fed the ache in Alonzo’s chest, but he took the time to remove his jacket and holster and double-check the safety on his gun before gathering Colin in his arms. Alonzo kissed his face and then held him tight.

“How do you feel?”

“You okay, ’Lonzo?”

“I’m fine. I promise.”

He shifted so he could see Colin’s face and hated to admit he didn’t look much better at all. He should be feeling stronger, especially with Lavaughn there to help. His face shone waxy-pale as though he was in shock, and he seemed to be struggling to keep his eyes open. Alonzo eased Colin’s head to rest against his chest and held him as tightly as he dared, but he didn’t think it would help as long as layers of fabric separated them. He turned to Lavaughn, sitting quietly in his chair and looking like nothing so much as a man who would be perfectly happy to commit a murder.

“You find what you were looking for?”

“In a way.” Colin’s fingers lightly brushed against Alonzo’s stomach, looking for skin, so Alonzo hiked his shirt up a few inches. Colin’s shaking began to subside as soon as his cold hand rested against Alonzo’s abs. “I can’t be sure yet, but I think someone’s found a way to use a conduit to drain someone without having to touch them. The conduit keeps enough residue so they feel strong and probably don’t even notice how badly they’re being screwed.”

“That’s not possible.”

“Neither is starting from nothing and learning how to drain someone with a kiss in only a few weeks.”

Lavaughn nodded.

“The conduit’s in jail, and the only kisses he’ll be stealing will be in the Oregon State Prison system. If he lives that long.”

“Is it K?” Colin could barely get a whisper out, but at least he wasn’t projecting the name out into the ether for anyone to notice.

“No. G.”

Colin looked up and made a questioning sound, and his eyes looked a little clearer, more focused. Alonzo felt an irrational rush of happiness he could do that much.

“I don’t have all the details, but they were both involved.” Alonzo kissed him softly and rubbed his arm as though he were trying to warm him up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t—”

Colin shook his head. His voice still registered as a whisper but shook less. “I didn’t know anything was wrong until a few seconds before you took me outside. Just like at the zine event, it was him. I thought it was her, but it was him.”

“It was probably both of them.”

He shook his head again. “His energy both times. It felt the same.”

“She was probably his conduit then, but she had to touch you.”

“No. Remember when he came up to us? He stepped in front of me, and the world…tilted.
