Years later, vague references to apparitions start to appear: "Our beloved Mother Mary of Guadalupe appeared in Tepeyácac" (ca. 1580); "she was seen among some rocks" (1589); in a Mexican illustration of 1622 the Virgin appears on a rock surrounded by flowers, and finally, in 1648 came Miguel Sanchez´s seminal book which first put in print the information that the image had a miraculous origin. A year later, the Nican Mopohua retold the story, although it is possible that the tradition that the Virgin had appeared on the outskirts of Tenochtitlan after the conquest had been circulating for decades.
