Chapter Ten
ELI
As soon as the changing room door blew open, I knew who had arrived.
I didnât even have to look over my shoulder or stop removing my makeup. The chitter-chatter in the room died off as if my fellow queens had just seen Beelzebub arrive, looking for a lap dance.
âWill you girls clear the room, please,â Mother asked. I rose. âEveryone but you, Elijah.â
âUh-oh, looks like Motherâs precious angel has a tarnished halo,â Monique threw out with a pleased little snicker.
âBetter a tarnished halo than that turkey you have shoved into your pantyhose,â I countered, motioned to her lumpy-ass padding, and then scrubbed at my lips with a removal wipe.
âIs that why her mama called her Butterball?â Clarice added. I snorted. The other girls laughed. Monique glowered, then stormed out, her snit level high.
âGo get a drink. Itâs on the house.â Mother Sitka growled. The room cleared quickly.
âIâm thirsty as well, Mother,â I said hoping she would blow right back out and get me a vodka and cranberry. But no, of course not. She deposited her regal ass into the rolling seat beside me, her top hat jaunty and unmoving when she tipped her head. âI mean thirsty. Not thirsty.â
âI know what you mean, Elijah.â She sighed deeply, then placed her whip across her thighs. She was still a striking queen, even though she was now in her fifties. What a life she had lived, each year of that life showed at times, like now, when she was worried about one of her drag daughters. âAre we sure about that man?â
I rolled up the wipe and tossed it into a trash can by my feet. Then I turned on my little stool and looked her in the eye.
âI think so. Iâve not been able to clear him from my head. I know the rules! I do.â I grabbed her gloved hands and squeezed them. âAnd I know theyâre there for our safety, but Tyr isââ
âDifferent, yes, I know. Theyâre all different, darling, until theyâre not.â
I let that one go. Sheâd been hurt in her past, badly, by a man whoâd been an admirer of her Sitka persona. That was all that I knew. Mother never went into detail and it was rude for a daughter to pry.
âHeâs not a fan.â Her look told me how stupid she thought my comment had been. âNo, heâs not. Well, he is, yes. He likes Gigi and finds her attractive, but he likes me, too. Me. Elijah. And I like him too, Mother. So damn much!â
âThatâs obvious, pet, butâ¦â She drew in a breath, shook her head gently, and then exhaled. âThen you best go meet him and do what it is you youngsters do. But try to go slowly. Donât give him your heart right out of the gate. Promise me.â
âI promise.â It was a lie. My heart was already his, if he wanted it. Dangerous? Oh, hell yes, but Iâd fallen fast and hard.
âYouâre such a terrible liar.â She bussed my cheek so not to smear her lipstick.
