I Donât Want To Fall
The wedding dance was in full swing. Luke sat in a corner watching the festivities. He wiped his brow with his sleeve and tried to catch his breath. The room was sweltering and he hadnât stopped dancing since the music started. It kept him distracted from thoughts of Jared.
âHey, Handsome.â Megan sat on his lap. âAnything wrong?â
âNo, just tired.â Luke put a hand to his chest.
âMe too. Itâs been quite a day.â She threw her arms around him, leaned in and whispered. âMaybe we should get out of here and go to the hotel?â
âI think thatâs a great idea.â
Megan grabbed him by the hand. âLetâs find Mom and Dad to let them know weâre making a break for it.â
Luke followed Megan, who said goodbye to people on their way through. He was still unable to catch his breath; his chest felt tight. Come one, Luke. Calm down. Youâve been through a lot the last few weeks.
Megan found her parents then embraced them. âWeâre going to get out of here. Weâre exhausted.â The loud music made it difficult to be heard.
âAll right, Sweetheart. Weâll take care of things here.â Candace smiled at Luke. âYou take care of her.â
âIâll do my best.â Luke kissed Candace on the cheek.
Michael took Luke by the arm, leading him outside. âDonât worry about the car. Iâm taking care of it.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI have a friend on the police force. Theyâre looking for Jared. He wonât get far. I may need you to come with me to the jail tomorrow to get this all straightened out.â
âJail? What?â Lukeâs pulse raced causing his chest to tighten more. âJared will be all right, wonât he? Iâm not going to press charges or anything.â
âWeâll see.â Michael patted his shoulder. âDonât worry about it. You two go and have a good night.â
âIâm ready.â Megan took Luke by the arm, smiling up at him.
Halfway down the sidewalk, Luke stopped. âWhat do we drive? I gave your mom her keys back?â
âWait!â Michael came running toward them. âHereâs the key to the Mustang. Be careful with her.â He threw them to Luke.
Catching them, Luke waved. âThank you.â They found the Mustang parked at the end of the parking lot. It was decorated with streamers and had âJust Marriedâ written on the windows. He helped Megan into the car then jumped behind the wheel.
Megan grabbed his hand. âI havenât been in this car since you took me to your prom.â She chuckled. âHey, that was our first date.â
Luke forced a smile at her, remembering the look on Jaredâs face as they lay next to each other. âThat was quite a night.â
