I Don’t Want To Fall

The wedding dance was in full swing. Luke sat in a corner watching the festivities. He wiped his brow with his sleeve and tried to catch his breath. The room was sweltering and he hadn’t stopped dancing since the music started. It kept him distracted from thoughts of Jared.

“Hey, Handsome.” Megan sat on his lap. “Anything wrong?”

“No, just tired.” Luke put a hand to his chest.

“Me too. It’s been quite a day.” She threw her arms around him, leaned in and whispered. “Maybe we should get out of here and go to the hotel?”

“I think that’s a great idea.”

Megan grabbed him by the hand. “Let’s find Mom and Dad to let them know we’re making a break for it.”

Luke followed Megan, who said goodbye to people on their way through. He was still unable to catch his breath; his chest felt tight. Come one, Luke. Calm down. You’ve been through a lot the last few weeks.

Megan found her parents then embraced them. “We’re going to get out of here. We’re exhausted.” The loud music made it difficult to be heard.

“All right, Sweetheart. We’ll take care of things here.” Candace smiled at Luke. “You take care of her.”

“I’ll do my best.” Luke kissed Candace on the cheek.

Michael took Luke by the arm, leading him outside. “Don’t worry about the car. I’m taking care of it.”

“What do you mean?”

“I have a friend on the police force. They’re looking for Jared. He won’t get far. I may need you to come with me to the jail tomorrow to get this all straightened out.”

“Jail? What?” Luke’s pulse raced causing his chest to tighten more. “Jared will be all right, won’t he? I’m not going to press charges or anything.”

“We’ll see.” Michael patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry about it. You two go and have a good night.”

“I’m ready.” Megan took Luke by the arm, smiling up at him.

Halfway down the sidewalk, Luke stopped. “What do we drive? I gave your mom her keys back?”

“Wait!” Michael came running toward them. “Here’s the key to the Mustang. Be careful with her.” He threw them to Luke.

Catching them, Luke waved. “Thank you.” They found the Mustang parked at the end of the parking lot. It was decorated with streamers and had ‘Just Married’ written on the windows. He helped Megan into the car then jumped behind the wheel.

Megan grabbed his hand. “I haven’t been in this car since you took me to your prom.” She chuckled. “Hey, that was our first date.”

Luke forced a smile at her, remembering the look on Jared’s face as they lay next to each other. “That was quite a night.”
