Kevin. I told you on the phone, I haven’t seen him in years, since his parents’ funeral, so I don’t really have anything to tell
you, I’m sorry
Ben. his parents were killed in a traffic accident in Turkey,
right
Kevin. yah
Paul was eighteen
they were on holiday
it was pretty traumatic for him
anyway that was twelve, thirteen years ago
I haven’t seen him since
I mean we were never really close
he was a strange kid though
a loner
um
God I haven’t thought about this for years but
my parents, we had a cottage we’d rent in the summer
and sometimes Paul and his mom and dad they’d
come and stay with us for a few days, a week
they didn’t have a lot of money
so I’d have to hang out with him, with Paul
there was this one time I remember
this one night
we were ten or eleven
we shared a room in the cottage
our beds were beside each other
there were pennants on the wall from like African
Lion Safari and the Montreal Expos
I woke up in the night to pee and he wasn’t there, he
wasn’t in his bed
it was three, four in the morning
he wasn’t in the cottage
he was just gone
everyone panicked
we looked everywhere
the cottage was on a small island
we eventually found him
he was sitting on these rocks by the water
he was naked, in his underwear, he was bleeding, he
was covered in blood, all like zoned out
his stomach was, there was a long cut down his
stomach
he said he didn’t remember how he got there or what
he was doing there
we never found his clothes, his pyjamas, um, so yah,
that was Paul
is that something you can use
Ben. what is it you do again
Kevin. I work at the university here in Ottawa
I hold a Canada Research Chair
we’re using, we’re developing MRI scans that can draw
pictures of people’s unconscious dreams
we’re recording the brain activity of sleeping subjects
we’re hooking them up to these specialized MRI
machines and using these machines to produce
physical images, graphic videos of their dreams, of
what they’re dreaming about
Ben. that sounds a bit, um, invasive
Kevin. what
Ben. the ramifications of that
Kevin. oh ha ha right
there’s nowhere to hide anymore
not even in your sleep
ha ha
11. a fuse blows
all the power cuts out
everything goes dark
