CHAPTER

‘Why does she use them if they’re so precious? Why doesn’t she keep them in the cupboard or on a shelf?’

‘I don’t know, Iz. Who could say why my mum does what she does?’

‘But I feel terrible.’

‘They’re old cups she’s had for twenty years, and it was an accident. Please don’t stress about it. My mother’s already doing my head in,’ Elliot said as he drove them back into Chalk Hill.

He’d started skip-counting prime numbers from sixty-one back in the kitchen as tears glistened in his mum’s eyes and Izzy rattled on about glue. Like glue could help. If only fixing broken things was as simple as applying fucking glue.

Skipping one. Fifty-three. Forty-three. ‘It wasn’t your fault. I’m the one who knocked it over.’

‘Your mum’s face! She was crying over it.’

Skip forty-one; next is thirty-seven. ‘She’ll be okay.’

‘Maybe I can find a replacement. I should have taken a picture of the pattern. I could have googled it.’ Izzy reached for her handbag at her feet and hunted for her phone. ‘I could google tea cups of the nineties.’

‘It’s a cup, Izzy. It’s a silly damn cup! Dan bought her the set at the school Mother’s Day stall twenty years ago. Cups break! They are shit cups out of China that cost five bucks for the whole entire bloody set. They make shit tea. They are just cheap imported shit!’

He exhaled through another set of three skipped primes. And okay, so he’d shouted far louder than he’d meant to, and Izzy was looking at him as if he’d started frothing at the mouth.

He gave up counting. ‘Sorry, but Mum is fucking obsessed with those cups. Cups break.’ Dan broke.

Beside him, Izzy’s face was ashen. She dropped her handbag to the car’s floor.

It was one thing to swear in his head. Now he’d sworn out loud. He hardly ever swore because swearing didn’t help. Skip-counting worked better. Concentrating on something else was the only thing that helped him when his thoughts turned to Dan.

His hands clenched the wheel and he forced the grip to relax. ‘Look, let’s just get back to yours in one piece, okay?’
