The goal for the album was primarily about creating a document for posterity, with very little focus on garnering fame or fortune. Because this kind of music usually only appeals to a real niche audience, the band members realized that their album wasn’t going to be a big money maker: there is an attitude in their musical community that boasts that “you can make literally dozens of dollars playing this stuff! But not all at once, of course. You have to be in it for the long haul.” Knowing from the get-go that the project wasn’t going to rake in the dough, they needed to keep it affordable. The solution was to take advantage of current technology and self-produce the album at home, as many other bands have been doing for a few years now.

As it happened, the desire to create an album dovetailed with an emerging recognition that the band really needed a better, more permanent practice space. Even though the band plays without amplifiers, they still make a lot of noise, and it was becoming harder and harder to schedule practice sessions that wouldn’t inconvenience the other members of her household. Paying rent for an off-site space was both expensive and impractical, but Brit realized that a small backyard building might work out just right. It was right around this time that Brit asked me for my input, and I was eager to help out.
