Beet leafhoppers are vectors for beet curly top virus.

ORGANIC STRATEGIES

› Choose resistant varieties, if available. Refer to the Vegetable Disease Resistance Abbreviations chart on this page.

› If your growing season permits, plant tomatoes and peppers one to two weeks later to avoid peak activity by beet leafhoppers.

› Cover plants with floating row cover or a mesh barrier to keep leafhoppers away from plants. The cover can remain in place for the entire season if the crop doesn’t require pollination. Otherwise, remove once the plants begin blooming.

› Weed the areas in and around your garden regularly to remove potential host plants.

› Intercrop vegetables that aren’t attractive to beet leafhoppers within susceptible crops.

› Research has shown that dense plantings are less attractive to leafhoppers, yet this can increase the risk of other disease problems.

› Remove, destroy, and dispose of infected plant material as soon as you notice and identify the cause.

› Insecticides aren’t effective, primarily due to the migrant nature of leafhoppers.

› Plant susceptible crops in a partly shady area or under shade cloth; leafhoppers prefer to feed in sunny locations.
