Chapter 22

Mason sat back. Dumbfounded. He thought about what he had just read. He glanced over at Marcie, who was still reading. Her lips were moving slightly, and her eyes widened more and more with each word. Finally, he watched her read the last page, and as she looked up, he could see her eyes were red.

She murmured. “Oh Mason, this is awful. What do you think it all means?”

“I have so many thoughts running through my head right now, Marcie, I honestly don’t know. At least we know Sami is out there trying to be a heroine. Let’s try to be logical about this. First, Sami mentions that she thought I would be reading this document. So, either she thought I knew the password or assumed that I would figure it out. She probably thought I would enlist your help, so you could help me figure everything out.” He said this with a wry chuckle.

“Well, Mason, we know how much she loves that car, so she may have thought we would figure it out. Anyway, we did, and you found the document she intended you to find. It’s just all so crazy. Did you know any of this?”

“I knew about the car accident and that her mother had survived. Any time I brought up the subject, though, it seemed like Sami always wanted to talk about something else. I never knew she had been treated the way she was – that there was so much violence and sadness in her past. I did know her mother had remarried, but I never dreamed it was so horrible for her. Sami has always been very loving and I always felt so confident in her love for Jennifer and me. I don’t understand why she hid this from us. It feels like a betrayal in some ways. It’s like she’s been hiding things from me for years. I’m not even sure I know who she is anymore. But I know I need to find her and get to the bottom of this.”

“I understand how you feel, Mason, but you can look at it another way. These are very dangerous dudes Sami’s talking about. There are references to murder, drugs, young girls, prostitution. My take on it is that she was trying to protect her family the best way she knew how. She loves you two so much that she is willing to do anything to protect you. If she had told you anything, and especially just before she left, you would have wanted to go with her. And if she’d told Jennifer, she would have wanted to get involved.

“Don’t you see, Mason? Sami is trying to protect everyone by possibly putting her own life in danger. I think that if these two assholes never resurfaced in her life, this document would never have seen the light of day. But they did resurface because Briscoe happened to walk into her bank and shot his mouth off. She decided that she had to do something.
