Ivy
In a manner of minutes, they had touched down miles from their starting point, and Ivy, jittering with exhilaration, practically danced across the ground with adrenaline and excitement.
“That was so much fun!” she laughed.
Christian took her hand and smiled. “I’m glad you enjoyed it. Sure beats taking the car, huh?”
Cars would never feel the same again, that was for sure. From the moment they had left the ground their trip had been a blink-and-you-miss-it adrenaline ride. Ivy had clutched tight to Christian the entire time, relishing the feel of the wind rushing against her face as they sped across the night sky and through the forest.
They were standing outside a very smart looking house. Ivy appreciated its modern edges and minimalist design. “This is the Orticon?” she asked, feeling slightly confused. When she’d heard the words ‘paranormal fight club’ this hadn’t been her first impression.
Distant laughter came in answer. A smart-dressed man with glasses exited the front door and walked to greet them. “I’m afraid the Orticon is a much grimmer affair. You must be Ivy; it is an honor to meet you. I am Zach Maximillian Hinks.”
Zach took Ivy’s hand and shook it. His voice brimmed with such reverence and respect that she wondered what she had done to deserve such a welcome. “I don’t think anyone has ever been so pleased to see me, which is puzzling.”
“I am pleased because I know who you are. All vampires have a unique gift, and mine is matching vampires with their mates. Christian was especially difficult for a long time, evading the mate he so rightfully deserved to find. That he has finally found you makes my heart sing with happiness. This is a great day.”
“A great day indeed,” Christian said. “Your middle name is Maximillian?”
“We all have our secrets,” Zach said.
“I like the name!” Ivy said in his defense. “Are you saying Christian and I found each other because of you?”
He smiled but shook his head. “Alas, no. In many instances my hand has steered two people together, but most of the time I can only lightly nudge people toward fate. The answers aren’t always clear. I only knew that Christian’s mate would come to him, and that he should wait here until she does. Well, voila. I was right.”
Ivy laughed. “That’s an unusual gift to have.”
“A blessing and a curse,” he said. “For I have never found my mate and see no sign of her on the psychic plane.” Such terrible sadness hinged the words that Ivy swore she could feel his heart break. The brief whisper of unbearable pain vanished as an optimistic glint formed in his eyes. “She will come, though. I know it, don’t you worry about me.” He turned to Christian. “We have a life to save.”
“That we do,” Christian said. “How much time do we have before the proceedings begin?”
Zach looked down at his watch. “I believe the main event begins in a half hour. Getting to the city in that time… on foot… it might be difficult.
