The Valentine Edition

Chapter Twelve

January 28

Jodi couldn’t sleep. There was too much trouble tumbling around inside of her head. Her growing desire to be with Josh was cut short by Della’s announcement. It made her heart literally ache. She wished for daylight so she could go to the office to get work done. Sunrise wasn’t coming fast enough. Cupid felt restless, too. He kept padding around the place as though he was in as much turmoil as his mistress was before he scrambled underneath her bed. “Cupid, come here.” She patted the covers beside her. In a moment he jumped up on the bed with a ball of crumpled paper covered with dust.

“Ah, my note from David resurfaces. I had forgotten all about it. May I please have it back?”

Cupid whined and dropped it. Slowly, Jodi undid the paper ball. There was David’s familiar signature; he wrote this to her years ago, when he was about to leave for college. “Shall I read you David’s note? It’s a good one.” Jodi patted Cupid’s head. “The first time I saw you, you were standing in a clump of poison ivy, skinny with scrapped knees. I liked you right away. From that moment to this, you have been my best friend. You make life entertaining, just the way it’s meant to be. Things will not be the same without you as I head off to college. I release you from being my girlfriend but only for the time being…just for the time being. One day, I’ll come back and claim you as my one and only love. Until then, be faithful. Wait for me. David.”

The first time Jodi said the words aloud, with her eyes closed, holding the paper against her. Then she silently reread the note several times, her eyes following each word, every letter. It was a beautiful note. She needed to get rid of this. And she would…but not right now. Not today. Not when she was dealing with towers and drawbridges and moats and crocodiles. Her entire love life flashed before her eyes. She looked at the note again, really seeing it for the first time. “David! You’re the one who made me the unreachable princess who lived in the high tower waiting for you to return to me. Not my dad! I have walled myself away from others…waiting and then you ditched me for Liz!” No wonder she had been so furious with David. The revelation sent her wheeling around the apartment looking for signs of dawn but there were no streams of light flickering on the floorboards.

She went to the window. There was someone on the path down by the lake so she parted the curtain further to look more closely. A jogger at this time of night seemed out of place. Jodi found it a bit disconcerting. Cupid followed right behind her as she went to the door and shoved a chair up underneath the knob. She’d feel a lot better with a working lock and not the assurances of her landlord that there was no crime in the area.
