‘Hi. Feeling better?’

Indira had not forgotten to call and check on her bipolar friend.

‘Totally.’ Mil was in the best of spirits. ‘I’m in the market. Getting supplies.’

‘What do you mean, supplies?’

‘See, finally I’m setting the house right. Until I deal with all this clutter, there will be terrible negative vibrations and things will never get better. I’m getting some rubber gloves to unclog the bathroom – they are bright yellow, awfully nice – and some aromatic cleaning liquid. I’m at the Dollar Store near PVR Priya. It’s fantastic! I’ve even got chocolate-flavoured wet wipes for the kitchen. Did you know such a thing even exists? I’ll get a packet for you too. Anything else I should buy?’

‘Wow!’ Indira was impressed. ‘That’s quite fancy. Rubber gloves? I just tie a polythene around my wrist before I attack the drain. By the way, I thought you were quite broke?’

‘But this is essential. Unless I deal with the clutter and set the house all right, the universe will never conspire to heal my life. Maya Tiwari says it too. Remember that book you lent me, The Path of Practice? I read a bit of it this morning while I was having tea.’

‘Oh, yes. Re-claiming the house, isn’t it? I’ll have to read it again. Have you bought Harpic and a toilet-brush?’

Mil was silent for a second. ‘No, that hadn’t occurred to me. Good you said it. Thanks.’

‘But Mil, don’t you think it would be better if you just rested for a while today? Cleaning and all will be very hectic.’

‘No, no, I’m fine. Plus, it’ll be a real surprise for Abhi when he gets back. Actually, I have a whole plan. I think I’ll clean the house. Then I’ll go and surprise him at the conference. Today, I’ll pick him up!’
