Restaurants, Fast Foods, and Eating Out

The average American eats one of three meals away from home each day, and it is likely that many of you are eating 5, 6, 7 or more meals a week away from home. Learning how to “eat out” is very important if you want to optimize your performance. You are probably aware that eating out presents different problems than eating at home. When we talk about eating out we mean eating at restaurants, fast food places, on travel, on vacations, and at social events.

Most people love to eat in restaurants or at places away from home. Eating out provides a change in routine, an opportunity to try new foods, a chance to socialize and a break from cooking and washing dishes (for those who do). Restaurant and fast food meals do not have to be unhealthy. By being informed and by asking appropriate questions, you can stay within the guidelines of your nutrition program and still enjoy the benefits of eating out.
