Chapter Seventeen

🝏 🝏

Evan Grand is a name few people will remember. He was a man with ideas that in his mind would make the world a better place. In that regard I have the smallest modicum of respect. His sole motivation was the greater good and, as far as I know, never for personal gain. I wonder if the Evan Grands of history all started out with noble but warped intentions. Visions born out of the ideal that JFK touched on when he challenged a generation to ask what they could do for their country. But I digress.

In truth, Evan Grand was a small man caught up in the midst of great events not of his making (a condition that I myself have been forced to accept). He was arrested in Temple, Texas, ten days after Carlos Gallegos’s head was found by Natalie Price (if you are keeping track, that would have been June 15) after his Econo Van was pulled over by a Texas state trooper because a yellow liquid was observed leaking from between the two rear doors and leaving a trail down I-35. Six barrels of ammonium nitrate were found safely secured to the walls of the van, but the top seal on one had loosened, and in the Texas heat and humidity the typically granular material absorbed enough water from the air to expand and liquefy. Normally, ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer. Occasionally, it is mixed with fuel oil to create ANFO, a powerful explosive used by homegrown and foreign terrorists to bring down buildings, including the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995, which killed 168 people (including nineteen children and three pregnant women) and injured more than 680 others. As it turned out, Evan had greater aspirations.

Why is Evan important to this tale? For a few reasons. First, he confirmed our suspicion that Sida was something more than just a theory dreamed up by Adis. Second, it showed that Sida was fallible, that he was just as susceptible to the shit-happens principal as the rest of us. Finally, it showed us that Sida had no regard for human life if that life stood between him and his objective, which at that time remained unclear.

Almost everything I know of Evan comes from Detective John Sharpe, who was one of the last people to talk with Evan. Detective Sharpe and I came to an understanding a few months ago, long after the conclusion of these matters, and began to share information on a variety of topics. Evan Grand was one of them. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to take a page from Adis and tell the tale of Evan Grand as a narrative story, so I will be forced to take some minor liberties. I will try and stay objective and in the third person, and once we’re done I’ll be back.

In the real world, Evan Grand was an unmarried man of twenty-six who lived in an upscale apartment in central Austin. He drove a two-year-old Camry, was cordial to his neighbors, and visited his mother once a month.
