Part Four: The Obsession

Lee sat next to Alistair in a booth. “So, what’s up?”

Alistair rubbed his chin, weariness evident on his face. Bags had appeared under his eyes, and new lines had formed beside his mouth. Poor guy. He took his job more seriously than anyone Lee knew, ferrying the worry home with him after his shift ended.

“Lee, I just don’t know where to turn or what to do with this case. The big guys are still guffawing at the killer being a man who changes into an animal, but after talking to those men that came in here…well, let’s just say what information they had was spot on for the kind of thing we’re looking for. They’ve done extensive research about werewolves and are apparently a team that captures them, taking them back to the forests in the middle of nowhere. We don’t hear about it because it’s all hush-hush.” Alistair took a sip of his beer. “The thing is, these werewolves kill for no reason. Not just because they’re hungry, but they have a lust for it. They’ll kill anything and everything that has a heartbeat. I just can’t imagine an animal killing for the sake of it. Other wildlife kill to eat, to survive, know what I mean?”

Lee fiddled with the hem of his T-shirt. “I went to the library earlier, and what you’ve just said is basically what I found on the Internet. We think these animals are a myth, but myths have to start somewhere, don’t they. I freaked myself out earlier after reading about it. And they don’t like holy water or silver either, but it all sounds so fucking childish. A fairy tale.”

“Silver? How the hell can silver hurt a beast that can strike you down so quickly?”

“No idea, but it apparently wards them off. A certain type of silver or gold disc really makes them back off. Shame everyone in town hasn’t got one.” Lee laughed.

“I’ll say!” Alistair rubbed his big hands over his face. “Aw, Lee. I’m just so tired. And if I’m honest, I’m bloody anxious too because I reckon there’ll be another killing soon—unless this beast has run off elsewhere. Didn’t think the bloody thing would live in a town anyway.”

“Yeah, but if you think about it, a werewolf is also a man, so they have to live somewhere amongst people, right? Maybe living in a town helps them blend in better. Who knows? It’s all so weird I feel on edge myself. Each time there’s a death, I get a piece of the meat, so to speak, and it isn’t pleasant.”

“I can understand that. I wonder…” Alistair’s eyes narrowed, and he tipped his beer bottle against his mouth, taking a long drink.

“What?” Lee frowned.

“Well, I’m wondering if this werewolf-guy knows you, so he gives these body parts to you as an offering. You know, some kind of gift.”

Shuddering, Lee said, “The thought of knowing this guy, wolf, whatever the fuck he is, scares me shitless. It could be anyone.
