CHAPTER 5

“Are you quite sure you cannot tell me the truth about what you spoke of with Lady Cecelia and Lord Reyes?”

Teresa glanced toward her cousin, seeing how Helena frowned, and wished desperately that she might speak openly with her. However, for the present, she knew that it was best to do as Lady Cecelia had asked and keep the truth to themselves. “I spoke to Lady Cecelia about something I had seen in the library,” she said honestly. “And given that Lord Reyes was in the hallway at the time I left the library, Lady Cecelia wanted to know if he had seen anything particular also.” She lifted one shoulder and looked away, a little ill at ease with speaking such untruths. “That is all, Helena dear.”

Lady Livingstone arched one eyebrow, as though desperate for it to reach her hairline, her eyes holding a look of evident disbelief, but Teresa did not say more. There was no need for her to do so, for she had to remain fixed to what Lady Cecelia had asked. The carriage continued to roll along the cobbled streets, jostling them a little as they turned the corner toward Lord Reyes’ home.

“Lord Reyes seemed very interested in acquiring you as a companion for his sister,” Lady Livingstone said thoughtfully. “There is not some other reason that he would wish for such a thing, I hope?”

A little affronted, Teresa turned her head back to give her cousin a direct stare. “I am good company for his sister, that is all!” she exclaimed, glad that she was able to speak the truth. “She and I will become fast friends, I am quite sure of it, for we are both of similar age and as yet unmarried, and with the strain of being a bridesmaid to Lady Cecelia, we will be able to support each other through it all.”

Lady Livingstone’s gaze did not soften. “Being a bridesmaid to Lady Cecelia is an honor,” she said quietly, a slightly chiding note in her voice. “When you speak of strain, it is a little unbecoming.”

“And yet, that is what there is resting on my shoulders,” Teresa answered firmly. “You must understand, Helena, surely, that there is a good deal of worry in my mind as well as excitement and anticipation. I fear, as Lady Lucinda does, that I might do very poorly indeed when the time comes and have all of society laughing at me thereafter!”

Lady Livingstone hesitated, then sighed and turned her head to look out of the window. “I must hope that you speak the truth,” she said softly as the carriage came to a stop and the door was held open. “And yes, I must admit that I can understand how you feel at present. It must be very difficult indeed and I shall do all I can to help you in this matter. Although,” she continued with a twinkle in her eye, “should all go well, then the gentlemen of the ton will certainly take notice of you!”

Teresa tried to laugh but the sound did not quite manage to escape from her lips.
