Chapter 10
The air inside the house was several degrees cooler than the forest they had just been in, and Owen felt a rush of cold as his skin broke into gooseflesh. His soaked shirt became a cold rag pressed to his torso.
As soon as they were across the threshold and he could tell that there was no immediate threat waiting for them in the large room, he spun and slammed the door shut. He engaged the deadbolt lock and the handle locks but knew that they would be a pitiful line of defense against the two groups of creatures. He turned back to the room, searching for something to push against the door.
The room looked like a lobby for a luxury hotel. There were half a dozen plush leather couches and an equal number of high backed chairs throughout the room. He saw at least three low, dark wood coffee tables and several smaller but equally thick and heavy looking end tables. The tables were tastefully decorated with lamps or magazines or hardbound books. A few had glass ashtrays on them. Large curio cabinets dotted the walls, each containing various items that Owen couldnât make out.
Jessica stood several feet ahead of him, taking in the paintings on the walls and the darkened hallway that led out of the room to their front and right.
âJess,â Owen gasped. His mind threw a vision of the group of creatures approaching the building. She turned quickly at his voice, a look of alarm on her face as if she had forgotten she wasnât alone. âWe have to barricade the door and these windows. Help me push some of the furniture.â He pushed away from the door and hurried over to the nearest couch. The thick, soft leather cushions gave under his touch, inviting him to lay down, enjoy their comfort and forget his worries.
The couch was heavy, heavier than he would have guessed and it took everything he had to push it and hear the legs scrape across the polished hardwood floor. Jessica ran to help and together the two of them managed to position the couch firmly against the door. They then added a second couch and several chairs and tables. There were six tall windows in the room, two on either side of the door they had blockaded and two more on each of the walls. Thick, heavy curtains that were pulled back and cinched with gold tasseled ties framed the windows.
Owen untied the curtains and drew them across the windows. As each one fell shut, the room fell into gloom by several degrees. He paused after the last one, letting his eyes finish adjusting to the murky gloom. Jessica stood a few feet away, waiting for him to finish so they could together push the curio cabinets against the windows.
âWhere are they?â she wondered. Her voice seemed to thicken as she spoke. âI mean, they were almost on us when we saw this place. As fast as they are, they should have been here by now.
