“Postmodern” Rejoinders

In this chapter, I turn an eye toward some of the salient contemporary perspectives from which my project is likely to be regarded with suspicion. I consider some influential thinkers—two philosophical writers and a loosely affiliated group of cultural anthropologists—who are noted for their concern with the implications of alterity and with the deeply problematic status of representations of the other. In responding to their provocations, I am afforded the opportunity to elaborate my position further. Iris Marion Young is prominent among these thinkers, and she, indeed, appears to contest much of what I have argued for.1 In the next section, I argue that Young’s position and, especially, her metaphor of “listening across distance” actually subvert the understanding of “understanding.” I then turn to Robert Bernasconi’s critique of hermeneutic understanding, and conclude with a brief discussion of what some so-called postmodern anthropologists diagnose as the “crisis of representation.”
