I hate to admit it, but I was intimidated by Kyle’s brilliance. He was one of the smartest students in our high school when we both graduated a few years earlier. I would eventually head off to college, finally becoming more serious about my own studies, but in the interim I stood in awe of Kyle, who knew so much about so many things.

That’s why I was surprised when he showed such interest in my newfound faith. Because I so admired him, I didn’t quite know how to respond. Fortunately he was truly seeking, so he called one evening and asked if we could get together to continue a spiritual conversation we had begun earlier. I agreed somewhat hesitantly, offering to drive over and pick him up.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. As I walked into the cool night air, started my car, and began driving toward Kyle’s house, I asked God for wisdom. I figured I would need divine help to merely understand Kyle’s lofty questions — and then I was definitely going to need God’s assistance to come up with some good answers.

He climbed into my Camaro, and we decided to just drive around and talk. This provided a helpful mix of privacy and focus for the conversation, without feeling overly intrusive. I often did this when sharing my faith with friends — especially back then, when gas was cheap.

In short order, we were talking about topics he had been studying in college. He tried to explain a particular school of philosophy he had become interested in, but I had never heard of it.

“Exit-stencil-what?” I asked him.

“It doesn’t derive from the word exit” Kyle explained patiently, “but from the word exist. It’s called existentialism, and it was promoted by thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche, and even the Christian philosopher Soren Kierkegaard.”

“Okay . . .” I said, straining to understand what he was talking about. “And how does this relate to your questions about God?” Kyle took another run at clarifying his position, but I finally decided to try to move the conversation in a different direction. “I’ll tell you what, Kyle, you might be able to help me understand this existent . . . um, the philosophy you’re studying, and then I might be able to offer a few thoughts about some of your questions. But for right now it seems that there’s some broader information about Jesus and the central message of the Bible that’s important for you to understand. And since I’m fairly new to all of this, I’d like to play you a tape of a talk a Christian speaker gave recently that I thought was really clear and helpful. Okay with you?”

“Sure,” Kyle responded.

Relieved, I popped the cassette into my car’s tape player (standard equipment back then) and let the recording explain the message for me.
