“Draw weapons!” General Kirn bellowed, drawing his own giant broadsword. Lance eyed the weapon. Not many people could wield a weapon like that let alone lift it. Seeing a weapon big enough to cleave straight through one’s body was terrifying for anyone standing in the way, but undead experienced no fear.

The knights prepared themselves just as the fast flying beasts crashed into the energy shields. They ripped and tore at the shields, pecking and biting with a scary ferociousness. Their beady red eyes glowed with an insatiable hunger.

Lance knew that timing was everything when using shields. The good part of shields was that they protected the user and their friends. The bad part of them was that it kept any of the caster’s own spells from going through to their target.

“I’m going to lift my shield!” Lance called out in warning. Hopefully the creatures could not understand his words.

“The rest of you hold the shields for as long as possible!” Master Porthos added. Some of the weaker energy shields were already starting to crack. Hopefully dropping the energy shield in one area would act as a funnel for the enemy and draw them all to one spot. That would give the others an opportunity to repair their own shields and for Lance to do some damage before raising his again.

As soon as the shield dissipated, the beasts swarmed through, much faster than Lance anticipated. One came within inches before General Kirn’s broadsword cleaved its head clean off. Lance didn’t have time to thank him. Knights around him fought the fastest ones able to get inside, but the next dozen were caught up in Lance’s whirlwind, a powerful tornado-like spell that tossed beasts around until their bones separated from joints and fell off. Dozens of the beasts died before Lance felt exhaustion replacing his rage. With his rage subsiding, Lance felt a deep emptiness within him.

He raised his shield again and the knights made quick work of the beasts still trapped within. Only a few knights lay dead or wounded around Lance. More of the beasts poured over the canyon walls until almost a hundred crashed into and attacked the weakening energy shields.

Master Porthos noted how tired Lance looked and yelled, “We need a plan!” It was clear Lance and the others couldn’t keep this up forever, especially with so many of the giant creatures attacking relentlessly. They did not tire. They only had one thought and one goal and that was to tear the humans apart bit by bit until they could feast on their bones.

Raven made her way over toward Master Porthos and Lance. Master Porthos was struggling to keep his energy shield intact and Lance looked emotionally and physically drained from the recent few battles. She dug in the pouch at her side and pulled out a ruby.

“When I say, drop the shield and form that whirlwind again,” Raven directed.

“I don’t know how long I could hold a spell of that strength again,” Lance admitted.

“It doesn’t need to be long,” Raven replied.
