With less paper tooth visible, this demonstration looks more like burnishing than layering. The reason is that a smooth paper surface and harder pencils were used in order to satisfactorily paint the small areas of color. Using a toothy surface and soft, wax-based pencils such as Pris-macolors on this painting would be somewhat like trying to paint a watercolor with a broom.
