ESTABLISHING A HEALTHY INDOORS ROUTINE

Good health and good sense are two of life’s greatest [indoor] blessings.

PUBLILIUS SYRUS

Many stereotypes about the Indoorsman way of life must be addressed so they can either be confirmed or denied. One such stereotype is that Indoorsmen are unhealthy due to a sedentary lifestyle, erratic sleeping patterns, and poor dietary choices. Therefore, it would be helpful to both evaluate and educate those interested in learning about Indoorsmanship concerning what it means to seek a healthy lifestyle within this particular philosophical paradigm.

Before we get to the specifics, let’s begin by defining healthy. In our day, health is often tied to a particular expectation of one’s physical appearance. We tend to think that being healthy means maintaining a healthy weight or being able to achieve sustained levels of physical and cardio activity.

Many people pursue strength training as the ultimate expression of a healthy lifestyle. CrossFit and other modern exercise programs have seen their gyms (or boxes, as they are called in CrossFit) literally flooded (well, not really “literally” flooded, as in the sense of a literal flooding of water) with people from all walks of life, including those of a more natural athletic persuasion as well as those who don’t really fit the bill but are more than willing to spend many bills for permission to lift dangerously heavy weights together.

It seems that everyone from former Marines to soccer moms to former Marine soccer moms (and others too) have joined the national phenomenon that seems to be producing a sense of unbridled joy, except, obviously, in the cases where CrossFitters are required to wear heavy bridles as a part of their routine. Then it can best be described as “bridled joy.” Either way, these athletes engage in interval training techniques of lifting free weights as a form of extreme cardio, all the while joining in with the onlooking community who produce raucous shouts of encouragement and challenge that can best be described as “a collectively happy exercise rage riot.”

CrossFit is like Jazzercise meets Braveheart meets a Dr. Phil marathon meets an actual marathon.

But for the Indoorsman, the pursuit of health simply begins with establishing a routine. This routine may differ in various ways from conventional health and fitness regimens, but it is no less effective—depending on how you measure effectiveness, which might render it slightly less effective.
