These dividends also encouraged a perseverance that eventually resulted in a decent reward. By the end of 2006, that $10,000 investment from March 1998 was worth nearly $17,000 with dividends reinvested—an annualized return of 6.2 percent. Even if a bit disappointing, this still beat the S&P’s average return of 4.6 percent over the same stretch. Far more dramatic is the rebound from the bottom: Rather than taking a 45 percent hit, the patient and courageous holder more than tripled the value of her investment from the bottom.
