There is something different about you.

Thursday afternoon, I find Stephanie crying in the living room. Kal also sees and quickly heads the other way. I shoot him a glare as I head toward Stephanie. I sit down beside her on the couch. She doesn’t even look up as I sit down.

“Are you okay?”

She nods, then shakes her head, sobbing harder.

I sit beside her, not knowing what to do or say. I just want to be there for her. When she’s ready to talk, she’ll tell me what’s wrong.

I hear footsteps on the stairs. I glance over and see West. He pauses, looking at me. He raises an eyebrow in question, so I shrug. After a moment, he turns around and walks back up the stairs, giving us privacy.

“I’m sorry,” Stephanie says, her voice breaking as she sobs. “I don’t mean to cry. I hate crying.”

“You’re talking to the only pregnant person in the house,” I say. “I cry over everything these days. Yesterday, I cried because Kal ate the last of the ice cream. He had to drive to the store at nine o’clock at night to get me more.”

She laughs through her tears. “That was kind of funny. The way he hung his head as he handed you a carton of ice cream was hilarious.”

I find myself smiling too.

“And then you didn’t even eat it.” She laughs harder.

I shrug. “I didn’t want it anymore. I was ready for bed by the time he got back.”

“The look on his face.” She wipes under her eyes, still laughing. “I swear, Kal and you are constant entertainment.”

“West used to be really jealous of Kal,” I tell her, hoping to get her mind off whatever was making her cry.

“Really?” Her eyes widen. “What happened?”

“I was single when I joined the team. So, Kal flirted with me a lot.”

She snorts. “Because he’s a flirt.”

I grin. “Exactly. But West didn’t see it that way. He thought we were in love. On one mission, Kal and I were undercover as engaged. Michael Sinclair told West that Kal and I have a lot of chemistry. West was so mad about that.”

She tilts her head to the side, looking at me. “You know, I’ve never met Michael Sinclair. I’ve never even had a conversation with the guy. Everything my team does goes through our Spy School contact and I’m not even sure he talks to Michael Sinclair directly.”

My stomach sinks as I realize my mistake.

Most Spy School agents don’t work with Michael Sinclair—there is no way they could. Spy School has so many agents working for them. But he prefers to work with Royals personally.

“There is something different about you,” Stephanie says. “About your team. You’re not a normal Elite team. If you were, West wouldn’t be in contact with Michael Sinclair once a week.”

I worry my bottom lip between my teeth, saying nothing. I don’t want to lie to Stephanie, but I can’t tell her anything.

“Alek and I got into a fight.” She gets a faraway look in her eyes as she focuses her gaze on the floor.
