Chapter 25: Battle Atop the Royal Oak

Zeke’s Metal Minions pulled Lucas’s limbs to the breaking point. The strain was unbearable as his arms and legs were stretched straight. He felt that if his limbs were pulled any farther, the bones would pop out of their sockets. Human anatomy offered insignificant resistance to the minions; they were easily capable of continuing the agonizing pull until Lucas’s limbs were torn free of his torso.

Then, there was a brutal jostle. Something slammed violently into the mechanical men, and they dropped Lucas to the floor. Lucas looked up and was very glad to see Tree, towering over him. The young sprikka was the last to exit the castle painting. It immediately saw Lucas’s desperate situation and did not hesitate to plow into the imposing Metal Minions. Tree was the only one there capable of stopping the Minions’ grasp.

Zeke was horrified; he had never seen a sprikka. His technical knowledge had no equal, but he knew nothing of the unusual creatures of the deep woods. He was terrified of Tree, which he perceived as a monster. “Kill it!” He squealed.

The three minions left Lucas alone and charged Tree instead.

Tree reached out with its long arms, grasped the heads of the nearest minions, and slammed them together, causing a loud clang. The third minion was upon Tree in a single bound, but Tree was ready with a thrusting kick to the thing’s metal chest plate. It crashed loudly to the floor. When the minion recovered, its two fellow minions rose with it. Despite Tree’s brutal attacks, which would have killed any man, the Minions were undeterred and unharmed. The mechanical men whined and steamed and clanked as they surrounded the more elegant creature of the forest. They closed in, blocking Tree from Lucas’s view. A sprikka was a formidable opponent, but it was obvious that even Tree was in trouble.

Lucas knew he was no match for the Metal Minions – no more than an ant would have been his match. He was wise enough to know that the only way to stop the minions was through their master. With dull pain throbbing in his taxed joints, he got up and charged Zeke, who was still struggling to free himself from the arrow that pinned him to the wall. Zeke did not have to worry about the arrow for long, however, for soon it was Lucas who was pinning him to the wall.

“Stop those…those abominations!” Lucas yelled into Zeke’s face. Frightening visions of Tree’s wooden body being splintered ran through Lucas’s mind.

“Surrender, and I’ll call them off,” answered Zeke.

Lucas might have considered that option, but he knew people well enough to know when they were boldly lying to his face. No, Lucas knew that there was another option. He was not proficient with mind reading spells – in that discipline, even Callovium could not put him on equal ground with JiJi, who was also inept with the difficult spells. But Terrance had taught him much during the last few weeks, so Lucas decided to try anyway.
