Chapter Eight
“I’ll be right back,” Violet said, trying to keep her voice even.
“Do you know him?” Charlotte asked enviously.
Violet ignored her and kept walking. She stopped in front of him and asked, “What are you doing here, Ashriel?”
He’d been smiling the whole time she was making her way over. “I came to see you, of course.”
“You can’t just show up here. If someone sees you—”
He held his hands up at his sides and looked left and right, wide-eyed and innocent. “People are seeing me right now.”
“You know what I mean. If a teacher sees you, they’ll know you’re not a student here.”
“If a teacher sees me, they’ll absolutely think I’m a student here because that it is what I want them to think.”
“You can do that?”
“I can do many things. I am Fairy,” he said proudly.
“Why do you say it like that? Why not just say you’re a fairy?” Violet glanced around nervously, hoping no one would think she was being insulting, but the other nearby students weren’t paying them any mind, though Charlotte and Sheila were still staring curiously.
“Just tell them I’m a friend,” Ashriel said with a shrug, looking first at Charlotte and Sheila then around the quad.
“Or I’ll just make them forget they saw you at all,” Violet mumbled, wondering how she was going to explain Ashriel’s presence.
“You can do that?” Ashriel repeated Violet’s earlier question, though she noticed he didn’t look all that surprised. It occurred to her that sharing her new power with a member of The Trust probably wasn’t the smartest move.
Ashriel had finally stopped looking around and studied Violet closely. She got the impression he was trying to intimidate her and she willed herself to stare back. Up close she realized he was quite taller than she was, and she had to tilt her head slightly to meet his gaze. His eyes were a bluish-gray that reminded Violet of the sky before an afternoon storm.
“How old are you?” she asked suddenly.
“How old do I look?”
He took a step back and Violet looked him over from head to foot. He wore dark blue jeans, brown boots, and a tan leather jacket completely unzipped. A scarf that matched the color of his eyes was knotted at his throat and hung in front of him, but Violet was able to spot what looked like a white button-down shirt underneath.
He’s definitely using some kind of spell, she thought. Dressed like that, no teacher would believe he’s a student here.
“Seventeen,” she said aloud, “maybe eighteen. But how old are you really?”
Ashriel stepped closer and smiled again. “Now that,” he said, placing his hands in his jacket pockets “is a more complicated question. And you never answered my question.”
“Funny, you never answered any of mine.”
“Fine. Let’s start over. You—”
“Okay,” Violet interrupted, “starting over. What are you doing here, Ashriel?”
“Call me Ash, all of my friends do.”
“You have friends?” Violet asked, caught off guard. She tried imagining Ashriel with a group of guys, watching football or playing pool.
He attempted to look insulted, but it came off more amused.
