Chapter Six

The music plays loudly and the audience cheers. We have a great opening act before the main show. Several of the actors run along the bottom of the bleachers and spray those with water who obviously want to be sprayed, and fling jokes and questions at the audience. By the time the show starts, spirits are already high.

I feel as if I can’t breathe. I’m nervous, afraid I’ll screw it up, and worried that Warren is going to appear at any second. I need to keep my cool. I’m not an essential member of the cast. If I miss a cue, or mess up, the audience won’t notice . . . but my boss will. I don’t want to lose this job. I like it too much for that to happen.

The lights in the back flash, indicating that the show starts in five minutes, so we need to get into our positions. The show lasts for an hour and a half and I play four different roles in that timeframe. I fall into the water twice, am carried over the shoulder of another actor and thrown into a boat once, and sing and dance on the third tier of the stage for the ending number. I’m not afraid of any of it, but I’m slightly nervous I’m going to squeak so loudly that it will come through loud and clear above the other hundred voices singing with me.

“You can do this,” I tell myself. “You can do this, you can do this, you can do this.”

“Damn right, you can do this. Get it girl,” one of the men says as he passes by and lifts his hand for a fist bump, which I automatically do. I then giggle nervously. I didn’t think I’d get caught talking to myself.

“I can do this,” I say more quietly.

“Showtime” is announced and we’re beginning. I run out into place and everything’s fine. I don’t look at the audience, just concentrate on what I’m supposed to do. I do it perfectly. It’s all going off without a hitch. Stephy’s out there and I want to look for her, but I’m worried if I do I’ll mess things up. I suspect Warren might be out there too, but then again, I haven’t seen him since I scared the crud out of him by mentioning the word marriage.

How in the world can I be thinking so much of this man when we haven’t even shared a kiss? We’ve flirted, and he’s propositioned me, but that’s where it ended. How many times in a day do those same things happen with random strangers without them giving the other person a second thought? I’m sure it happens more than I realize . . . especially in Las Vegas.

It’s my next to last scene and it’s time to do one of my falls. I rush out onto the plank and get into my sword fight with one of the raiders. That’s when things go terribly, terribly wrong. I misstep and push forward instead of falling back, and then his dull sword hits me in the side of my head.
