“Drop down and I'll catch you."

It sounded easy when Edward said it.

But Tirith couldn’t seem to let go of the branch her arms were wrapped around.

Edward’s hand was warm on her ankle. She tried to tell herself she wasn’t that far from the ground. If she could land on her feet, even if Edward didn’t catch her, she would probably be all right.

But there was no guarantee.

Why had she chased the stupid cat up into the stupid tree?

“I know you’re thinking about when you got thrown and broke your arm. You must’ve been lonely and bored during those months of recovery. You probably missed your dad like crazy.”

How had he guessed?

Edward’s eyes were warm and compassionate.

It was a reminder of what she’d wished for so long ago. For her father to be there with her. For him to look at her like that. Wrap her in his arms and tell her everything was going to be all right.

But Maggie had needed him, too, and Tirith had never told him how much she needed him on the rare phone calls she’d shared with her dad.

“I’m right here,” Edward said. Edward, who wasn’t going to let her fall. He’d promised. He watched her with a steadiness that comforted her.

She wanted to believe him.

He must have seen acquiescence in her expression, because he let go of her ankle. “Sit down on the branch instead of crouching. You can drop right down.”

Moving felt too scary. When she’d tried to stand, the branch beneath her had swayed She’d thought she was slipping off.

Edward didn’t falter. “Sitting or standing, I’m going to catch you.”

She exhaled a breath that was more tremble than air. She wrapped her arm fully around the branch that was at chest level and slowly maneuvered until she was seated on the wide branch where she’d been squatting.

Edward reached up to squeeze her calf. “There we go. Now for the easy part. Let go of the branch and drop down into my arms.”

She scrunched up her nose. “I have to let go?”

“’Fraid so.”

She glanced back at the ornery cat who’d fooled her and gotten her into this problem. “Did you know, this branch is more comfortable than I thought. Ralph and I can live up here. You can bring me food and water.”

His eyebrows rose. "Ralph?"

"He looks like a Ralph, doesn't he?" She nudged her head toward the cat.

His eyes were warm and if she focused only on them, she could ignore the dizziness that wanted to distract her. He looked tired. Worn out.

He tugged on the tip of her sneaker. "Come on, highness. Let go." There was warm affection in his voice instead of the sarcasm she'd heard that first day.

He took a half-step back so he wasn’t directly underneath her. He held out his hands.

She let go of the branch above her and pushed herself slightly forward. She slipped off her seat on the lower branch.

She saw surprise in his eyes, but he caught her against him as she fell, her belly against his chest.
