Darkness

T he man kept very little in documentation, and none of it in any order, but Pax finds what he needs, the only sheet with Shade’s name on it. Papers that prove whoever holds them owns our woman. Folded neatly, precisely, into Pax’s pocket to be dealt with – but not tonight.

We don’t say anything as we exit the building, choosing to go straight out the front doors. The house is still stifling with years of ash-filled fear layered across every surface.

That won’t go away overnight.

But we’ve no need for discretion now.

This is what we came here for. The last disgusting breaths of an evil man. I won’t get the taste of his lies from my mouth for weeks. Not unless I can replace it with the trickle of sweet honey.

The night is still. Calm. Void of danger.

Our steps through the rose garden announce every move we make as I feel the dying threads of Martin’s human soul holding on for one more moment, struggling not to flicker out through the body that is now broken and useless.

“Send him into the Aeons,” Pax says, not turning back.

I grunt, maybe asking, ‘Are you sure?’

“We should send him. Maybe the grimm will find him. Maybe he’ll taste delicious, and they’ll decide to invade this side of the border instead of ours.”

“Maybe you want him punished for eternity?”

He doesn’t answer. Stiff shoulders leading the way to a barn and three shovels by the door. Convenient, though we only need two.

“For eternity,” he finally says.

I don’t argue, instead dumping the body on the ground and choosing a spot to dig. Soft soil. Easy work.

The sun edges toward the sky, and both of us are desperate to return to the rest of our team.

Pentad – in theory.

Shadow – in reality.

Our woman.

This is what Pax has made us, not the killing part, but the willing to do anything for each other part.

I was worried his darkness would rise to the surface. That feeling the need to punish this fucker would tip Thane into power and Pax so far into the background that more deaths would happen before their balance could be restored.

But that didn’t happen. Nothing could be further from the truth.

And what’s left is a pentad.

Pax needs to respect her power. To return to the castle and finish what we've started. She can do it.

Not yet. Not tomorrow. But there is only one thing in her future – fighting the grimm.

And I know now that she can survive it.
