Once again, I stared at the ceiling. It was 2:30; sleep was impossible as I tossed and turned and fought the feeling I had all week. I got the creeps thinking of someone in my house. What could they possibly be looking for?

Frustrated, I sat on the edge of the bed and looked out the window. It had been raining on and off for almost ten hours. It wasn’t the heavy torrential rain from earlier in the evening. This was a steady rain and seemed like it would never stop. I was surprised the electricity hadn’t gone out. That’ll be next.

Walking into the kitchen, I heard Teri’s door open. She came out and whispered, “Can’t sleep either?”

“An impossibility.” We then heard the snoring from the living room. “Well, it’s not impossible for Ben,” I said and put the kettle on the stove. “Maybe some tea will help.”

We sat at the kitchen table. The only illumination was the small light above the stove. “So what gives with Martin Reese?” Teri said thoughtfully as she drank her tea.

“I don’t really know. Part of me likes him. However, and this is a big however, I don’t like the way he looks at you. I don’t like his brooding moods, and I am not that fond of seeing him with that gun. The way he cleaned it unnerved me, Ter.”

“Well, he’s a Marine. Mac can still take apart a rifle and put it back together. That part doesn’t bother me as much as him doing it in the dark. That unnerves me.”

“At least we know now why he stares at you,” I said and explained about his sister.

Teri’s eyes widened. “She’s dead? I remind some gun-toting Marine sergeant of his dead sister?”

It did strike an eerie chord. Martin was an unusual character indeed and now, with his dead sister looking like Teri. “I’ve got to keep my eye on him. All this seems to be happening since he’s been staying on the lake. I don’t know him. He’s totally unfamiliar to me. If he’s the prowler, what in the Christ is he looking for? What do I have? Damn, I don’t get it. And what the hell was he doing in my woods? He appeared to be looking for something. No, I don’t trust him. Something is up with Martin. I only hope he’s not a Section Eight on the loose.”

I laughed and so did Teri. Our laughter quickly turned to frowns as we realized that possibility.

“Like I’ll ever sleep tonight,” I said and raised my teacup. Teri nodded in agreement.
