CHAPTER NINE

Victoria hummed “Frosty the Snowman” as she lathered her hair in the shower the next morning. Their dinner date the night before had been nothing short of incredible, and while she fought the urge to read too much into the rekindled spark between them, her mind reeled. Luke traveled to the city for work. Maybe they could keep some sort of relationship going when she returned to New York? She could visit Brookhollow more often… Meet him halfway, when she wasn’t traveling.

Applying her lavender-scented shave gel to her legs, she ran her razor along her skin. A long-distance relationship wasn’t ideal, but certainly anything was better than not being together. And over time they could figure things out’ She hoped he shared her opinion.

Her iPhone rang in the next room. With her new, consistent service, that thing hadn’t stopped ringing. Luke had turned it off during their restaurant picnic. The night before they hadn’t discussed the store or the battle of wills they found themselves in. She still needed this acquisition. She wondered if this turn of events would make Luke more willing to sell. She could explain that once this deal was done, they could move forward with…whatever this was. But the bottom line remained the same—he needed to sign the sale papers for the store.

Victoria turned off the water and drew back the shower curtain. Reaching for her towel, she wrapped it around her body and grabbed a second towel to dry her hair.

Then the room phone rang. Her mother? Her brain was frantic as she tried to remember if she’d done anything incriminating in the last twenty-four hours? Nope.

“Hello,” she answered, cradling the phone against her shoulder as she dressed.

“Good morning, pretty lady.” Luke’s husky tone suggested he’d just woken up.

“Good morning to you.” Victoria glanced at the clock. It was after nine. “Sleeping in this morning are we?” she asked with a laugh.

“I was having a fantastic dream and didn’t want to wake up. You were in it.”

Time to change the subject. “So, any more Christmas lights need hanging today?”

“Nope, today I need your help with something.”

“My help? With what?” She sat on the edge of the bed and slid her legs into the only pair of jeans she’d packed.

“Well, until your company has an offer for me to refuse, I still need to go ahead with my store renovations and I could use a woman’s opinion on paint colors.”

“Luke, you can’t be serious. That would be a huge conflict of interest,” she said. Wet hair fell against her shoulders. Obviously their dinner hadn’t put a dent in his resolve not to sell the store. She picked up her cell phone from the bedside table. One new voice mail and Erik’s cell number appeared on the screen. “Besides, my boss left me a message this morning. I’m willing to bet it was an offer.” She hoped it was true. Once they could put this acquisition behind them, they could entertain the idea of a relationship, not before.
