CHAPTER TWENTY

I considered, and immediately dismissed, the idea of returning to Leon French’s house and asking for my phone back. Despite the state of my life now, I didn’t yet have a death wish.

My dashboard clock read 3:30. I was meeting Bryce at eight. I needed a new phone, but I needed to talk to Molly first. She was becoming more and more crucial to solving this. Brian the thug had said he thought the delivery person was a woman. Molly was a woman. Molly had easy access to Bobby Ray. Molly, as a social influencer for the bar and club scene, would have connections to acquire black market medication. Molly also had a huge crush on Bobby Ray.

But what did that all add up to? If she was his supplier, was Bobby Ray just a conduit to the Rangers football team players? A hundred grand seemed like a lot of money to sell to an organization that at most had about 200 potential buyers. Even factoring in friends and family and hangers-on, they were looking at only about 500 max. Did he have other avenues to sell his drug?

What still didn’t make sense was why a man who just signed a ten-million-dollar contract would take the risk of running black market pain meds. Was he doing it as a favor for a friend? For his girlfriend? Or was he like a lot of players and still couldn’t believe the money the NFL was paying him was real? That wasn’t unusual when someone grows up poor. Maybe he wanted to augment his income to buffer against something bad happening.

I was hoping Molly might shed some light on my confusion.

Traffic was heavy and without Google telling me the areas to avoid, I hit one accident and two construction zones and didn’t reach the condos until almost an hour later. Rolling past the entrance, I spotted a news van parked outside. The cameraman and a reporter stood off to the side, smoking cigarettes and reading their phones, waiting for something to happen and end their boredom.

I wasn’t going to provide the reprieve, so I steered for the garage and took the elevator to the eighth floor. Stepping out, I glanced to my left, to Bobby Ray’s door. The crime scene tape was gone. Things were back to normal.

I approached Molly’s condo and pressed on the doorbell. No answer and no sound coming from inside. I knocked, but still no answer.

Disappointed, I headed back to the elevator. It dinged as I reached for the button. When the doors parted, a middle-aged couple started out. The man wore a pair of denim overalls over a short-sleeved, camouflage shirt. His arms were skinny, but his gut was big. He smiled at me, revealing a missing bottom tooth. The woman did not smile. She was short and as wide as my Audi. She wore a Disney T-shirt with Mickey and Minnie grinning from across her ample chest. Her pants were a pair of black, tight yoga pants and her shoes were a pair of dollar store Croc knockoffs.
