Chapter Forty-Three
The connections arrive in waves. One after another that pull Brenda Lyons from a state of darkness to one of alerted panic in just a matter of moments.
First up is the pain. The throbbing agony just above her left temple that makes her entire head feel misshapen. Added to it is the pressure it produces inside her skull, every beat of her heart feeling like her brain is fighting to burst through her scalp.
Next in line after that is the heavy layer of tape covering her mouth. Limiting both her movement and her air intake, it seems that the entire bottom half of her head is encased in the adhesive covering.
In order from there, her attention goes to the fact that her wrists are bound flush together. A tight casing that encompasses her entire hands, making it impossible to peel away the tape over her face.
Same for her ankles and even knees, keeping her legs locked into place.
A completely constricted position that pushes adrenaline into her system. Reignites every faculty in her body at once, shoving aside the trauma in her head.
Neurons beginning to fire anew, she stares with eyes wide into the darkness of her new environment. Another trip in the damned trunk of a car, her weight dropped onto one side. Her full body pressing her left hip and shoulder into the uneven surface beneath her.
A floor covered in various items, every last one of them gouging into her. Threatening to press through her clothes or puncture her skin.
Fighting to pull in enough oxygen through her nose, Brenda can feel her heart rate spike. Rising far enough and fast enough to bring her body temperature up as well, a sheen of sweet forms on her brow.
A psychosomatic response to where she is.
What it might mean this time.
The last thing Brenda can recall with any clarity is the door to her cell opening. The man standing before her, any hopes she had of him arriving and departing quickly dashed as she realized he wasnât carrying anything with him. Gone was the usual plastic sack filled with provisions for her.
Same even for the rag soaked with the foul-smelling chemicals.
In their place was nothing but the man glowering down at her. A stance that saw him stand framed in the doorway, his shadow falling across the floor, for only a moment before rushing forward.
A sudden burst that left her with barely enough time to let out a single yelp before he swiped out with a vicious right hook. A shot that landed square, dropping her straight into darkness. A black void encompassing an unknown period of time before waking up in the trunk.
Bound in the rear of the vehicle that is not moving, there being no telltale bumps as they move along. No sound of the road passing just a foot or two below her.
Not even the rumble of the big engine in whatever kind of vehicle she is currently stowed.
Facts that can only mean they are stopped. Sitting in silence somewhere, the man either waiting or planning.
