Cyberpunk

This chapter examines the development of the cyborg through the cyberpunk subgenre and explores the emergence of paradoxical antiheroes from the integration between biology and technology. As will be demonstrated, cyborg characters and the social realities they inhabit have been largely influenced by the punk-rock subculture of the 1970s, which shapes the physical appearance of the characters (from fashion to body modification and augmentation), determines the social realities in which they are depicted, and is reflected in the ideological foundation underpinning the narrative (manifest as an anarchic philosophy advocating anti-establishment and the rejection of normative social values).
