Thus, in the minds of the Americans, Hillyar and Tucker’s actions were truly dishonourable and infamous. Essex’s losses were given at approximately fiftyeight killed and, and mortally wounded, thirty-nine severely and twenty-seven slightly wounded.22 One of Porter’s midshipmen (his adopted son) remained unscathed. Forty-eight years later, he became the United States Navy’s first admiral and hero; David Glasgow Farragut.23

Phoebe’s losses were quite disproportionate, with just four killed and seven wounded. For Tucker’s Cherub the death toll was one killed with three wounded (including himself in each leg), but even these casualties were difficult for him to accept as these were the men who had served him for many years.24 In Hillyar’s letter to Commodore William Brown, dated 30 March 1814, while stationed in Jamaica, he commended Tucker’s conduct during the battle:

My friend, Capt. Tucker, and officer worthy of their lordships’ best intentions, was most severely wounded at the commencement of the action, but remained in deck till it terminated; he also informs me that his officers and crew, of whose loyalty, zeal, and discipline I entertain the highest opinion, conducted themselves to his satisfaction.25
